Shopping For Kids and Saving Money at the Same Time

Buying clothes for growing kids should not lead to the need to declare bankruptcy.
It’s no secret that with the changing seasons of winter into spring then before you can blink its summer, comes the inevitable shopping trips to buy kids in most cases' entirely brand new wardrobes. Growing and healthy children is what every parent strives to achieve. However, with the relief that everything is turning out just as it should comes the inevitable burden of keeping kids in clothes that not only are appropriate for the seasons, but also allow them to exceed confidence to take on the day.
As it is with everything else nothing really comes for free. Without strategic in terms of where to buy clothes for kids and when, the end result could be receipts that add up to staggering totals. Different pieces may seem cute and cheap at first glance, but as things add up, the result could end up being financial disasters.
It would be unrealistic to take the path of not buying kids any new clothes at all and strictly sticking to hand me downs that go back a few years. Giving children comfortable lives, which allow them to fit in with their peers should not be confused with spoiling them. Making this assumption is especially ridiculous since these shopping excursions only happen at the most a few times a year.
Learning how to make purchases responsibly is just as important as making it possible for kids to have outfits they actually want to wear. Not only will the following tips of the trade result in happy kids, but your pocket book will thank you as well.
First stop…off – price retailers
There’s nothing better than finding well-known brands for less. In short, you really get a lot of bang for your buck. Popular retailers such as Ross, Marshalls and TJ Max are some of the go to destinations to find kid’s stuff they’ll actually like. At the same time, the feeling of being financially robbed once the cards are swiped, and you’re out the door will be close to non-existent.
There is, however, a downside to sticking to these bargain retailers which is difficult to ignore since it confronts shoppers head on as soon as they step through the sliding automatic doors. The very reason products are being sold in large quantities is because they’re the result of surplus from bigger named department stores such as Saks, Nordstrom and Macy’s. In layman’s terms pricier department stores order more than they could actually sell. Therefore, the solution to get rid of this excess product is to turn them over to retailers who could sell these products at reduced prices.
Which could result in last year’s style sensation being this year’s new outfit. For little one's, it doesn’t really matter, but when dealing with teenagers it could be a trickier subject to breach.
What if going through racks and trying on outfit after outfit just isn’t your cup of tea?
One of the biggest deterrents for mother’s especially those with two or three small children is the chaos that can ensue during a simple shopping trip. An outing that’s supposed to be relaxing and fun starts to have as much appeal as a triathlon. Are pricier online retailers their only option? You’ll be relieved to know that's not the case.
The wonderful thing about the Internet is that shops all over the country and sometimes the world are right at the shopper’s finger tips. One particular online retailer is practically a gold mine of deals. Zulily started to gain popularity a few years ago and since then their customer base has been steadily rising. The only downside to this retailer who sells brand names for much less than the department stores, once you find something it’s best to purchase it right away and not wait around to think about it.
In short, the stuff is great, but at such small quantities. So it’s not really the best place to browse and window shop. Shoppers are highly recommended to browse through the site with the intention of making a purchase. Then of course there're always Ebay and Amazon. However, since those retailer’s products are hardly regulated it’s more on less a gamble that you’ll actually get what you pay for. Sometimes nice products on the screen with a price tag to match aren't exactly what’s about to get delivered at your door.
It's all about the kids, right?
Just as important to catching a good deal is learning how not to jump the gun by planning entire shopping trips around retailers that will allow shoppers to get a lot more for much less. Let’s not forget that these clothing pieces are necessarily what in anymore. So, take the kids along for the ride and let them have a say in what they’ll wear on a day to day basis.
Most of these retailers will allow little to no refunds, so making sure the kids like the clothes is just as important as finding them. Wasn’t the point of this bargain shopping to get rid of problems, and not create new ones?
What’s worse than receipts with totals that’ll make you want to cry? The migraine which will be the result of a crying child who won’t wear the clothing you’ve spent your hard-earned money on for the simple fact that it just isn’t “cool” anymore.

Social Media Engagement is the New Red Herring - Don't Fall For the Trap

Today I got out of a meeting matching a brand with a celebrity for some influencer marketing. The celebrity was very gracious, even said he didn't need any money upfront and wanted to see how he and the brand worked together first. I thought it was a match made in heaven.

HOWEVER - After ironing out details and setting everything up, I get the message that the brand had to pull the plug because the celebrity did not have enough "social engagement" on their posts. NOW, any of us who have been around long enough know that social engagement "at best" is a tactic not a strategy. It is definitely not a measurement tool for public relations success.

This is extra comical, because this celebrity was at the Oscars this year. He could have delivered Instant brand value. YET, the brand didn't even want to part with sending him a good faith sample of the product because there aren't enough likes on his pictures. I actually laughed out loud. Now, keep in mind, even though this is an established brand, their director of performance marketing seems to be in his early 20s. [which is another topic: just because someone is younger doesn't mean they are more relavant - use your brain and business logic before embarking on a Ponce De'Leon style hiring spree]. Not that there is anything wrong with that, I employ some great young minds - but I don't allow them to make narrow decisions based on fads. You shouldn't either.

Anyway, back to the topic of Social Media Engagement. Over my 10+ years of experience working on influencer marketing and celebrity endorsements I've seen campaigns where there were only a few "likes" on a post but the click rate on the links, and the purchases made from the links were FANTASTIC. I have even worked on a campaign where even though there was almost zero social media engagement - everywhere you went (In person, off-line) people were talking about it! And let's face it, the real world STILL happens off-line. Those campaigns were HUGE successes for the brands - social media engagement #s had no correlation.

Conversely, I've seen campaigns where there were an enormous amount of "likes" and comments - but not One single useful click, nor any impact on brand awareness let alone revenue. Seriously! All they got out of the deal were some "likes." I know it is hard for the social media engagement lovers to admit, but it happens. And it happens more often than you think.

Social Media Engagement is a RED HERRING (A red herring is something that misleads or distracts from a relevant or important issue. It may be either a logical fallacy or a literary device that leads readers or audiences towards a false conclusion. - Wikipedia)

Anyone who makes business decisions based on Social Media Engagement is not only wasting their time, but while you are distracted by the herring - your real opportunities are slipping past you undetected. 

This is a public service message,I hope you are one of the few that will heed it. In fact, at this moment in time - IGNORING social media engagement might give you competitive advantage. While everyone is busy digging for fool's gold, a few will know better and dig elsewhere.


TGI Friday's Shames Customer with a Fake Promotion Disaster - TGIF Corporate issues Fake Promotional Certificate


We don't think of TGIF to be as bad as United Airlines or Pepsi when it comes to treating customers horribly, but recently the restaurant chain made clear that they have no interest in treating customers well either.  TGI Friday's, the major corporate restaurant chain issued fake coupons as a guest relations certificate.  The coupons are not counterfeit, but in fact issued from TGIF Corporate themselves!  But that's not the worst part, the worst part is how the restaurant manager(s) react to it.

These TGIF issued promotional certificates are starting to cause serious problems.  When guests try to use them, TGIF first allows customers to order $100 worth of food, but at the time of paying - the certificate doesn't work.  And customers are left having to pay the bill.

According to Jeff, a manager at the Lake Zurich, IL TGI Friday's location, he has run into this fake, although legitimately issued on their part, "certificate" more than once.  It is a mystery as to why he doesn't tell customers upfront that the coupons won't work, but we suspect it has to do with confusion between corporate guest relations and individual store management.

The coupon is supposed to be the equivalent of  a $100 certificate. In one situation, the coupon code did take off $12 but caused for quite the scene.  The TGI Friday's refused to honor the certificate.

"We would never have ordered so much food," said the customer who TGIF manager made a public scene which embarrassed them in front of the whole restaurant.  It appears that TGIF may follow suit after United Airlines and Pepsi in lack of customer care and bad-publicity.

The coupon has been verified to come directly from TGIF, either they got the code wrong or never entered the code into the system.

So if TGIF gives you a certificate or coupon BEWARE, even if it comes from TGIF directly it may not be legitimate and the individual restaurants have no interest not making customers feel like fools publicly and demanding they pay.
